Inauguration of Batch-3 of Young Scientists Induction Program (YSIP) – Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)

The Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam (IIMV) inaugurated the on-campus mode of the third batch of the Young Scientists Induction Program (YSIP) under the aegis of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on 5th November 2024. Fifty-three young scientists from the various centers of ICMR are participating in the program.

Prof. Prashant Premkumar, the Program Director, extended his warm welcome to the participants and briefed them about the training modules and the program outcomes envisaged. The 4-week program is designed to enhance both functional and behavioral competencies, equipping participants with the skills needed for professional excellence. This training program aligns with ICMR's recent announcement of the "First in the World Challenge," a bold initiative encouraging Indian scientists to pioneer groundbreaking health solutions with global impact. This program emphasizes the need for innovative, out-of-the-box thinking—qualities that will be nurtured through collaborative efforts.

In his opening remarks, Prof. M. Chandrasekhar, Director of IIM Visakhapatnam, thanked the Indian Council of Medical Research, for the initiative. He highlighted that the program serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, skill enhancement, and collaborative learning, where bright minds converge to explore innovative solutions to the challenges of tomorrow. The competencies that this program imparts will help the participants imbibe an “entrepreneurial” mindset and higher orientation towards serving the raison d'etre of their organizational roles and functions, facilitating ease of research, ease of doing business and ease of living.

Dr. Lakshminarayanan, Deputy Director General (Administration), ICMR, highlighted the success of the previous batches of the Young Scientists Induction Program. He spoke on the opportunities for professional growth and development as well as an enabling environment that exists in ICMR.

Dr. Sandipta Chakraborty, MD, MPH, Project Manager, Scientific (Medical Research Planning & Coordination), ICMR was the chief guest for the inaugural function. He highlighted that this program is more than just an initiative and that it is an inspiring platform that ignites the minds of young scientists shaping them into future leaders. He also mentioned the future training opportunities for experienced scientists through mid-career management development programs.

Prof. Kaveri Krishnan, Program co-director, delivered the vote of thanks and expressed her gratitude to Dr. Sandipta Chakraborty and Dr. Lakshminarayanan for gracing the event. She also thanked Prof M. Chandrasekhar, Director IIM Visakhapatnam, who played a pivotal role in the launch of this program. She further extended her thanks to the participants for their active interest in learning and upskilling of their talents.

The inaugural session ended with IIMV placing on record its deep gratitude to the Secretary to the GoI, Dept. of Health Research and DG (ICMR) Dr Rajiv Bahl for his encouragement and support for this path-breaking initiative. IIMV also expressed its gratefulness to Dr Sanghamitra Pati, Additional Director General (Addl. Charge); Ms. Manisha Saxena, IRS; Senior Deputy Director General (Administration); Shri Rajeev Roy, Senior Financial Advisor; Dr R Lakshminarayanan, DDG (Admin); and Shri Jagdish Rajesh, ADG (Admin) for their instrumental role in this unique and trend-setting capacity building program becoming a reality.
