Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam (IIMV) is happy to announce its first Online Faculty Development Programme in Analytics. We invite applications from motivated faculty members and educators in management and allied areas.

IIMV has been conducting several major Programmes like Two-Year Post-Graduate Programme in Management (equivalent to MBA), Two-year Post-Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEx, equivalent to MBA), Two-Year Post-Graduate Programme in Digital Governance and Management (equivalent to MBA), Fellow Programme in Management (equivalent to Ph.D.). In the past, IIMV conducted Faculty Development Programme (FDP), several Management Development Programme and TEQIP Programme. However, the prevailing coronavirus situation presented an opportunity to design a new online Programme for the faculty members, research scholars, and research associates/academic associates who wish to develop/refresh knowledge of data analytic tools and their applications.

Objective


The objective of this online Programme is to provide a framework and necessary data-analytic tools required to process large numeric datasets, inference from which can be used for data-driven decision making. The Programme will focus on examples from various management domains. Apart from learning data-analytic tools, the participants will be exposed to a statistical software, R for data analysis. While knowledge of preparing scripts in R will be disseminated as a part of the overall objective of the Programme, it will not attempt to be at a specialist level.

Participants will benefit from this Programme if they encounter some or any of the following situation(s) at work:

  • If you are interested and want to equip with data analytic skills.
  • If you are interested in redesigning your ongoing research to make them more useful for business decision-making.

If you want to develop/refresh your understanding about basic statistical acumen, some relevant data analytic tools, and their applications.

 

Content


In today’s world, large amounts of data are readily available in virtually all areas like Human Resources, Marketing, Operations management, Economics, Finance, Psychology and others. Given the availability of data, preprocessing and analyzing of the data becomes important to make data-driven decisions. This Programme will provide training in usage of different data-analytic techniques. This document gives a brief summary of the content of the Programme. Kindly note that descriptions only provide a broad idea of the topics. Individual faculty members may make alterations to the content, as may be appropriate for their session. The topics that will be covered in the Programme are:

  1. Exploratory Analysis: This topic exposes the participants to the data processing. Specifically, participants will be exposed to the basic graphical and descriptive analytic techniques. Concepts on outlier detection and missing data imputation techniques will also be covered.
  2. Statistical Inference: This topic deals with the methods, and practice of forming judgements about the population characteristics and the reliability of statistical relationships. Specifically, participants will be exposed to the basic notions of Sampling Distributions, Confidence Intervals, Testing of Hypotheses, Bootstrap methods, Comparison of two populations.
  3. Simple and Multiple Linear Regression (SLR and MLR): Estimating the coefficients, assessing the accuracy of the coefficient estimates, assessing the accuracy of the model. Multiple linear regression: estimating the regression coefficients, qualitative predictors, potential problems in SLR and MLR. Use cases and hands on with R.
  4. Logistic Regression: An overview of classification, why not linear regression? The logistic model, Estimating the regression coefficients, making predictions, multiple logistic regression, logistic regression for >2 response Classes. Use cases and hands on with R.
  5. Forecasting: This topic explores the presence of trend and seasonality in a time-dependent data. Both graphical and testing methodologies will be emphasized so as to produce univariate forecasts for conventional time dependent data. This topic also covers several forecasting techniques like Naïve method, exponential smoothing method, ARIMA, TBATS, MAPA and Croston’s method.

 

Programme Delivery Mode & Software Requirement


  • Zoom Software: The online FDP will be in Device-to-Device (D2D) mode on the Zoom platform. The participants are required to login for attending the sessions from their computer. A stable 4G/Broadband internet connection will be required. Note that the login details will be sent to the registered participants before each session via email.
  • R Statistical software: Participants will be exposed to a statistical software, R, which can be freely downloadable from https://www.r-project.org 

 

Duration


  • The Programme will be conducted from August 17 and August 21, 2020. There will be two sessions per day from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM and 7:45 PM to 9:15 PM as per the Indian Standard Time (IST).

Registrations will continue a first-come-first-serve basis (based on the above-mentioned steps and fulfilment of criterion) until August 15, 2020 or until the maximum intake (as determined by IIMV) is met, whichever happens earlier.

Bhargab Chattopadhyay joined IIM Visakhapatnam (IIMV) as a faculty member in the Decision Sciences Area in IIMV. Prior to joining IIMV, he was associated with the Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Texas at Dallas and Indian Institute of Information Technology Vadodara.

At IIMV, he has been teaching several Decision Science courses in the PGP, PGPEx, PGPDGM and doctoral Programme. His research interests revolve around Inference, sequential analysis and change point detection and its applications to different fields like Psychology, Actuarial Science, Image Sensing etc. He published papers in various international journals like Econometrics, Psychological Methods, Multivariate Behavioral Research. He has been invited for department seminars in several universities in US, Singapore, Costa Rica, New Zealand apart from different universities in India. He is also the Associate Editor of Sequential Analysis Journal.

Shivshanker Singh Patel is a faculty member in the Decision Sciences Area at Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam (IIMV). Prior to joining IIMV, he was associated with Institute of Rural Management Anand, and Mphasis- NextLabs.

At IIMV, he has been teaching courses on Data Science, and Operations Research in the PGP, PGPEx, PGPDGM and doctoral Programme. His research interests lie in the domain of system modeling analysis, forecasting, and optimization, applied to scarce resource management and logistics management.
