Problem Statement
Jaundice is caused by an excess of bilirubin in the blood. In high-income countries, newborn jaundice is
easily treated with phototherapy and rarely leads to kernicterus (a type of preventable brain damage that
can occur if severe jaundice goes untreated). In low- and middle-income countries, however, kernicterus
ranks as the seventh leading cause of mortality in newborns. According to the WHO, there is a significant
burden of severe neonatal jaundice. In developing countries, 45% of these cases are of severe conditions,
leading to mortality or lifetime disabilities. In India alone, 15 million babies are born with jaundice, and 6.7
million suffer from severe jaundice, which may lead to death or lifetime disabilities.
This is because the devices we have now can't do phototherapy well and aren't nearly as easy to get. This
is because of their high costs and complicated designs, which limit them to high-end clinical settings. Blood
transfusion is the only way to help people who are very sick, and this is widely known in the lower pyramid
sector. The chances of survival are nascent post blood transfusion, so prevention is the only solution.
Solution
Heamac Healthcare introduces a smart design approach to technology for neonatal jaundice management.
Their device provides efficient therapy, reducing prolonged treatment times, and their human-centric design
approach prioritises the needs of the newborn in the first place.
The Journey
Prasad Muddam: I'm a product designer who develops and designs medical devices. When I had my first
child, doctors said my baby was suffering from jaundice, and she had to be shifted to a paediatric hospital
that was 50 miles away. The worry and anxiety were beyond tolerance. When I visited my baby, I saw the
device and realised that I had worked for that product. It was a triggering point for me to dedicate myself to
work in the field of new-born care, to develop smarter and more intelligent devices for new-borns.
