INDIA – AN OVERVIEW OF THE INDUSTRY
The Indian Textile & Apparel Industry is one of the
notable players in the global arena with excellent
raw material source and manufacturing
infrastructure. India is the second-largest
manufacturer and exporter in the world, holding a
5% share in the global textile & apparel trade.
The Indian Textile & Apparel Industry is the second largest employment provider in
India, next only to the agricultural sector. According to the Annual Report FY-2019
of the Ministry of Textile, the sector employs around 45 million people directly and
60 million people in allied sectors, and is characterised by a large pool of skilled and
unskilled labourers employed in conditions ranging from low-scale handloom mills
to capital-intensive large textile mills.
